How it works
- Open any YouTube video.
- Press "Get chords" under the player.
- The chords appear as the video plays, with the key and tempo beside them.
- Press "Full result" to open the same track on earchord.com for the whole timeline.
Nothing is downloaded or uploaded
The extension reads audio the YouTube player is already producing, using the browser's own Web Audio API. There is no download of the video, no copy sent to a server, and no request to EarChord at all while it runs. Analysis happens in the tab, on your machine.
That is also why it is free and unlimited. Sites that turn a pasted link into a chord chart fetch the audio on a server, which costs bandwidth, which is what forces free tiers into daily limits. Reading audio that is already playing costs nobody anything.
What it does not do
The first version is YouTube only. Spotify is technically reachable but the obstacle there is terms of service rather than any technical limit, so it is left alone.
The chord vocabulary is 24 major and minor triads, the same as the site. Sevenths, suspensions and inversions are reported as the nearest triad. Widening that vocabulary measurably degrades ordinary pop and rock, so it is not a free change.
