Why guitar reads well
Guitar puts a lot of energy exactly where chord detection looks. The low E and A strings sit near the bottom of the analysis band and give a strong, unambiguous root, and strummed chords sustain long enough to fill several analysis frames. Clean electric and acoustic rhythm parts are close to the best case for this kind of algorithm.
High gain is the opposite. Distortion adds intermodulation products at pitch classes nobody fretted, and power chords contain no third at all, so there is nothing in the signal to say major or minor. A palm-muted riff will often be reported as the triad the rest of the arrangement implies rather than what the guitar alone is playing.
Reading the shapes
Every chord on the timeline expands into a fingering. Where a common open shape exists it is shown; otherwise you get the movable barre shape rooted on the sixth or fifth string. These are positions, not the only positions - if a shape sits badly under the part you are playing, the same chord anywhere else on the neck is still the same chord.
Questions
- Does it handle capo or drop tunings?
- It reports the chords that are sounding, at concert pitch. With a capo at the second fret, a shape you finger as G sounds as A and is reported as A. Drop tunings are read the same way, by what comes out rather than what is fingered.
- Will it find tab or individual notes?
- No. This is chord detection, not transcription. It tells you the harmony, not which string each note was on.
